Your postcard is beautiful. Love Sunbonnet Sue, someday will be able to make a quilt in this pattern. But then maybe I should just learn the computer and print it off and then just have to quilt it. One art replacing another! HMMM.

Re:Bunny wall hanging

  • Re:Bunny wall hanging - 2008-01-03 15:56:41-05
Stencil Paint Creme could be used. I have used it on fabric a couple of times. It is oil based and takes awhile to dry. Only drawback on something like a wall hanging is that the recommendation is to wash the item before storing. I assume this is to remove any oily residue that might transfer to another part of the quilt.

The blush is probably the best idea for the bunny. For muliple items the paint would be good.

Re:Bunny wall hanging

  • Re:Bunny wall hanging - 2008-01-03 15:22:42-05
I love the Bunny as well, would make a great Height Chart to hang in a childrens room as well as for easter. Fancy being that far advanced to be thinking of Easter. Heard on the radio this morning that there are Hot Cross Buns and Easter Eggs in the shops for sale so you are not the only one.
For the cheeks you can use oil crayons in a pale pink rub it in then iron it with some paper towel on top to absorb the oil and the colour stays in and is washable.

Diane, I have used both watered down folk art type paint, and real blush on dolls etc. Both work well. If you arent used to using the paint, probably the blush is a bit easier to apply to the right colour you want.
Oh and I almost forgot too - LOVE THE BUNNY. And the quilt next to him

    Hi Anna,
They are about 30 x 46 nice size wall hangings. The snowman quilt I made 2 of to give as gifts, they were for special friends. And the looks on their faces made it all worth the time. The other is for myself! Hand quilted all around every figure block.
    Thanks for asking.

    Hi Mary

Are you sure you have 1/4 beyond your point?

I always use a water soliable marking pen to show where the point is when I am sewing and that way when I sew my seam I can see if I am going beyond the tip of the point. Hope this will help you. Diane

Re:Matching Points

  • Re:Matching Points - 2008-01-02 14:26:56-05
Mary can you tell me what pattern you are working with? When you say you are cutting off your points, is it during the assembly of the block or when joining other blocks together? I would like to help you but to do that it would be better if I understood more about what you are doing.

Points can be tricky, but they can be also be mastered if we understand where the problem lies.

Looking forward to learning more from you.

Re:Matching Points

  • Re:Matching Points - 2008-01-02 12:09:33-05
I agree with Kathy. Once I learned why there is a thing called scant 1/4 inch it was easier to visually make it happen. If you sew exactly on the 1/4 inch mark and you loose a bit in the seam when you press because even fine thread has a thickness, then you are going to have problems later when you need to match up points. I find it easier to take up a little extra in the final seam that joins the points together than try to make do with a tiny seam to keep the points, ummm pointy.

We all have our own way to get it to work for us and it is just a matter of practice making perfect I think. My new machine has a clever little bar that I can set at just under the 1/4 inch and my fabric runs along it before it gets to the feed dogs. I LOVE it.

When I was working on my double wedding ring quilt I found the only way to get my points to line up and stay that way was to pin, then hand stitch just the points, turn right side out, check and if it was good, then machine sew. But that is curves and another whole issue of its own.

PS, the double wedding ring is almost quilted now and I will be posting a finished picture any day. YIPPPYYYY. We will not mention that it was a wedding gift that should have been ready for last August.

    Have fun Mary,
    Anna

    Anna,
I am so happy for you I too have the similar frame. I have the Little Gracie II that I use with my Bernina. I have the same problem Chris has with the larger quilts getting too big under the roll. I have learned to use the low loft bats that make it easier to quilt. They are cotton too and my family loves the way they turn out. I am so happy for you so go and play. So sorry you fell, hope that you didn't have too much damage. I hate to fall.

Re:Matching Points

  • Re:Matching Points - 2008-01-02 01:50:46-05
You really need to take a scant 1/4 seam; you loose a little fabric in the fold of the fabric. Put a pin through one point and then the other, put pins both sides of that pin to keep it from shifting. When you sew, aim for just outside where the points line up.

A fraction of an inch of extra material at the points doesn't show as much as cutting a dark point off. Aso, before redoing a point, view the quilt from the distance it will be viewed at; if it isn't noticable, don't change it. Consider the use of the quilt, if it will be an heirloom, fix it; but if it is to be a child's quilt don't bother.

When putting units together you sometimes have to vary your seam allowance a little. At least I do, because no matter how carefully I sew and check my measurements, something doesn't come out right. I don't rip out and resew, unless my seam allowance has shrunk to less than 3/16 . If it turns out to be 1/8 for a short ways (less than 1/2 ), I might let it go and double stitch to cut down on fraying. Some of that depends on the quilt's use.

    Kathy

I have made dolls and I use real blush. The hard compact kind with a large makeup brush works wonderfully. It isnt completely permananent but how often do you plan on washing a seasonal wallhanging. The doll I made wasnt meant to be played with and so has not been washed and it still looks perfect. I also used some eye shadow to highlight the eyes and thats staying on well too. I think I have read that spraying hairspray on will set it better, but I didnt want that sticky stuff on the doll. I have wondered as well if the spray to waterproof fabric would set things like this. I think its called scotch guard. Im sure you will get some other ideas from the clever people here and I will be watching and reading for myself too.

Oh, and this is not an afterthought but did almost forget to say, LOVE THE BUNNY!!!!

Joyce, hello from Canada, we are in the noodle shuffle too, and we are a whole big country, (not part of the USA), but I know you didn't mean to ignore us. Therefore there are 5 countries in the shuffle and yes we would prize fabric from South America. Penny has to join, just think of all the fabric she would get to play with on that new machine. And it is very interesting feeling the fabric from each country. I know it costs a lot more in Australia, but the feel of it is such good quality. We need someone from Japan and Africa to get more varieties. But then if there are too many I won't be able to afford it.
    Happy New Year. Pat

As for attaching 2 photos, you really can not. 1 per post is all. But if you want to continue in the same post, you can just click the reply button, and reply to your own post. That way it will be a continuation of the original one. Make sense?

When your feeling ambitious you can start your own galley collection as well. That way you can just keep adding pictures of the items you create. Like these quilt pictures, and those lovely PJ's you were talking about. (If you need help there are many posts on how to do this, but Simon has but instructions right under the gallery button. Just click gallery and there is a link that says adding photos . If I remember correctly there is a video of the instructions there.)

Keep quilting, you seem to have a natural talent for it!

    Hello everyone:
First of all I want to say a special thank you to everyone who responded to my questions on my Janome sewing machine. I hope that I was able to thank everyone personally but if I missed someone please forgive me, it was not intentional. I wanted to thank you all for being so sweet and helpful.
Ok, the two pictures I am sending are of my first quilt. I made this for my son and his wife and designed it myself. I call it My favorite memories just snipits of times together that were so happy.
Before making this quilt I had never sewn before, but with the patient help of my sister, who I adore, I made my first sewing project of polar fleece PJ's for my 3 grandsons. I then jumped right into the quilt that you see here.
Hope you all enjoy the story and the quilt.
    Penny

    Welcome Penny,
The stained glass connection is interesting. I used a stained glass pattern of an Orchid as the basis for a signiture block. A photo is in the gallery (kquilts Rob's quilt, in the sub gallery marked temporary name).

Lovely to have someone from South America and look forward to seeing lots of exotic quilts. You must join the noodle swap, it's great.

Hello, Pennyswings and Welcome to Creative Quilting, I am Joyce and I am from Australia. I too have a Janome although not the same model as yours, the Walking Foot and free hand quilting foot, (Called darning foot here) are universal for most models of Janome. I purchased mine from my Janome Dealer.
Quilting in the ditch I just use the foot that came with my machine that has a clear plastic piece in the middle so you can see the seam. Works well,
I too usually hand quilt but it is slow and now I need to be quicker so as to get on with the next project.
I hope you read the forum and catch up on the Noodle Shuffle information, we only have Noodlers from the UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand to date so one from a new country would be good. Again Welcome. Joyce

Penny, first let me welcome you to this awesome site. You will make lots of new friends and get answers to all your questions. Well almost, but we try.

Dont fret about posting twice, it happens sometimes and none of us have figured out exactly why. Sometimes its us getting impatient and other times it does it all on its own. Not to worry.

As for posting pictures, if you have them on your computer you can upload them to this site easily with the browse at the bottom of each post window. However there is a size limit. Your picture must be resized on a program on your computer to email size or smaller, ie
640x480. I use an image manager for HP, but whatever you have will work. That is the trickiest for most people to work out. After that its a breeze. Some people here are whizzes at computer stuff so if you get stumped just ask.

Its great to have you aboard.
Happy New Year Hugs, from BC Canada

I made my first postcard this Christmas too. I found it intimidating at first but Chris posted some great instructions and links which were very helpful. Will you be making more? I know I will for sure. Its nice to see your name turning up every now and then. New people are always welcomed with open arms here.

Im from BC Canada, Can I ask where you live? If you are ever on and want to chat, just post in the chat box and I bet you get someone fun to visit with. Dont be shy, we are not close enough to bite.
    Hugs, Anna

Threads, thank you so much for your reply and for your welcome.

What a great suggestion. I tried to find info on the machine before but for whatever reason was not able to find that site. Narrowed my search and I did try again. I was able to locate the site and I joined. Waiting for reply so I can get into their forum. Plus I am so happy because I was able to download the manual for my machine in english. Did not speak Spanish before I moved here but am doing ok now. Still have problems with technical things, like Windows in Spanish and manuals (as you could probably imagine) so this was a great gift.

I even got adventurous this year and joined a stained glass class. I have to learned how to do this and have met other people. I am having fun with that and love the work, it is like making quilt patterns, only in glass. In fact I even found a flower quilt pattern used in applique and used the pattern for the flower to make a holder for tea bags for my sister-in-law for Christma. That was fun.

Back to the discussion at hand, I am going to take the part names and numbers that I found on the site to the dealer where I brought the machine and see if he can order them from the company. I did go there last week but he did not know if they had these parts or not so this should help alot.

One other question and then I will leave you alone, LOL. Since you have the machine do you know if I can free hand quilt by raising the presser foot, did buy a clear one, and lowering the feed dogs? I am going to practice stitching in the ditch quilting without the ditch quilting foot. I think if I take it slow I can do that ok.

Again, thank you for the welcome and your suggestions. I am looking forward to spending time chatting and browsing the site.

Hope to talk with you soon and when I figure out how to download a jpeg from my computer I will share with all of you here my first quilt. Ok, one more question, is there an area on the site where they have instructions to do this or can I just use the Select Image file to attach option at the bottom of the message to do that?

Happy New Year to all, many blessings, peace, prosperity and happiness to everyone.

    Sincerely,
    Penny

This photo shows the inside corner of the bag and how to square it off by sewing across the corner.

Make bags any size you like. These can be made ahead for the next season or they can be a craft sale project. This is the time of year to pick up the fabrc on sale.

They can be simple or fancy. The simplest bags I have seen had sewn sides and a pinked top and a ribbon tied around them. The fancest I have seen had an inside casing for the ribbon, the ribbon came out through a space in the side seam, and were faced on the top with coorinating fabric.

Here is a simple gift bag I made. Make a bag like a pillow case. If you want, square off the corners. You can make a casing at the top for drawstring, or in this case I just sewed on ribbon tabs (left over peices) for ribbon to go through.

Great thing about fabric bags is that they can be reused many times and ironed if they get too wrinkled (I should have ironed this one before I took the photo). Save a tree!

Anna, there won't be any problem sending our noodles to you now will there? You're not just being the coordinator to increase your personal stash by having all the rest of us send you fabric and trust you return some to us? (just kidding, of course) Happy for you and your wonderful presents. Pat

Wow, you will have fun with this new toy!

I recently bought a similar frame (made by hinterberg) What a difference in my quilting! I get quilts done much quicker now. The only problem I have is I don't have a the long arm machine to go with it yet. So I use my Babylock. That limits me on large quilts. As the roll gets to big under the machine and I loose quilting space. But all I do is turn the quilt around. So I can still complete large quilts, I just need to learn to plan my designs so that I can quilt them upside down.

Oh to have the long arm machine ............. you are one lucky girl.

Santa was good!

I have been itching to share this with you my friends, but wanted to show the frame set up with my quilt on it. That has been slow in happening as I slipped on the ice Christmas Eve and havent been able to help my hubby clean up the area of the basement that I want to set it up in. But I cant wait any longer so here is a picture from the manual and the machine pictured is the one I bought earlier this year.
How many kudo points does a husband get for putting this under the tree? I think I may never be allowed to say idiot under my breath ever ever again!
I cant wait to get it set up and practice a bit. I wonder if any spring cleaning will happen in this house this year? No? I didnt think so either.

Hope everyone got something wonderful under their tree as well. Hugs
    Anna

What a fun quilt. I wish I had the patience for applique. Did you do needle turn or is is fused and machine appliqued?
