Joyce you are so fast and good at what you do. I wish I had time to play with the embroidery machine like you do. I have to do that at work though since it is there and not at home. I hope to share pictures of some quilts soon. I am just having trouble finding time to get them on the computer.

I wish I had time for sewing. That seems to be a thing of the past. Its a shame with the new machine, new quilting frame for the machine, and I even have the attachment for the machine that gets rid of the foot pedal so you can control everything from the handle on the machine. That was the last thing Tom did before the accident, he went to the bus and picked up the part that was shipped in. It was in his truck and one of the first things he said when I saw him, The control arm is in a box in the back of the truck . It is still in the box because I just dont have a minute that Im willing to give up taking care of him or just being with him. I sure do like coming here and seeing all the fabulous things you have been doing though Joyce.
I know its selfish, but I WANT AN EMBROIDERY MACHINE!!

Joyce, at least you have something to show for your time. I'm addicted to the computer and Sudoku puzzles (I haven't allowed myself to do them on the computer). The daily paper has them and I have a daily calendar with them.

For me the sewing goes until I have to get a project done, though I do like to sew.

It is good to make baby quilts that will be loved. That is what they are for. I try to make all of my quilts to be used.

Joyce, I look forward to those days. Today would be a great day to stay home and sew. It is snowing like crazy, a real blizzard, and I drive 55 km to work and back again. At least I only work half days on Friday so miss some of the traffic.
Anyway your work is still beautiful and glad you get to spend your time the way you want to. As you say who cares about housework, and my husband too is very patient. If he wants something cleaned and I haven't got it yet, he does it.

Thank you all for the answers, Have to become an explorer and look for KingTut. Sounds like what I am looking for. I did use the glazed thread, it did not clog up my machine but was still and came untreaded from the Needle all the time, very frustrating. Cheers Joyce

Re:Question?????

  • Re:Question????? - 2008-01-31 07:54:15-05
I got told NOT to use the hand quilting thread for machine quilting, as it's waxed and thats what gums up the machine. When I bought my quilting frame last year, they recommended King Tut because Egyptian cotton has longer fibre and doesn't twist/tangle or break so easily

Im wondering if Thank-you cards would be good. I know I have to get on that and send thank-yous to everyone who sent Tom flowers, fruit baskets, home-made food while he was in the hospital. I would have bought a couple special ones for the very special people and all their work.

Oooooooh Joyce, you are so inspiring! That quilt is beautiful. When my granddaughter was 2, I made her a teddy bear quilt. She took it with her everywhere and I do mean EVERYWHERE! When she was 16, she handed it back to me in tatters and said fix it and give it back! What a compliment! I am sure you are going to have the same compliment!

    Good job, as usual!

Baby Quilt

I have just finished another baby quilt for one of my daughters friends. It seems both my daughters love this one as I have made 3 of them now. Two were in blue and lemon and now the pink one.
The quotes on the embroideries say These stars are the angels that hold you while you sleep and These stars are the angels that warm you while you sleep .
I have used fabric with stars on it and a coordinating striped one. Then appliqued randomly the stars. It is quilted by machine and I added a couple more stars quilted with a pattern on my Embroidery Machine, (have to try everything once). It worked well but was hard to get in the hoop, as it is quiet thick. It is a really simple quilt but I am happy with it. I hope the baby drags it around with her and loves it.

The Postcards are in the gift shop of the hospital, but is only a little country hospital, big cases go to the bigger city hospitals. We mostly have accomodation for the elderly there, but they sometimes like to buy little gifts. I took stamps with me the self sticking ones work best, not the ones you lick. I also put a little bit of fabric glue to make sure they stay put. I got a bit over zealous and cut out batting for 30 (great way to use up the batting scraps) I am going to make some for new babies, Like It's a Girl , It's a Boy , Happy Birthday etc

Joyce are they in the gift shop for visitors to buy or on a cart for patients to buy? Here patients are not suppose to have much cash on them, but visitors should want to buy them for the person they are visiting. I know I would, especially hand made. If they don't sell quickly try putting a stamp on them so they are prepaid.

Re:Question?????

I have hesard such good things about King Tut and I have never seen it here in the US, so I really don't know anything about it. That is not to say it isn't the best. I use Guntterman, or Mettler, and i most likely spelled both of those wrong. That is the brands Bernins recommends and they carry them at the store I work in so that is what I use. I also use Isacord embroidery thread, because I read somewhere that it was good for machine quilting and we sell it in the Bernina store I work in. Our store is inside of a fabric store so we sell the embroidery thread and the fabric store sells the sewing thread. I have not notices any gunking of my machine.

Joyce, they really do look very nice. Maybe ask a few people what they would pay for them. And maybe it is a timing thing. What doesnt sell this week or next may be popular in another week. See what happens in the next couple of weeks. It is new to most people so may take that time to take off.
But good luck with them. The work you have put in and the finished article is worth $6.

I think I am hooked on Postcards at the moment, don't know how long it will last, but made these to sell at the hospital where I volunteer. There was a lot of interest today but, $6AU might be a bit much to charge for them. I thought as they were on the etsy site Chris put us on to, for $7.50US that $6 was OK. I never know how much to charge for things and I only get back a few dollars to cover my costs, the profit goes to the hospital, so not a money making concern for me. Just fun making them.

Re:Question?????

I have YLI quilting thread (the lady who runs our Quilt Shop is from USA so stocks this thread) I use it for hand quilting and love it, but yesterday I tried to use it for machine quilting and it is slippery. I did not notice if it gummed up the machine or not, will have to check. I also have Gutermann threads which are not as shiny as the YLI. I think I will look for the brand Marilyn has as well, you can never have too much cotton? We are of to the Quilt Convention at the end of February so will look for it there. Cheers, thanks for the anwers, Joyce

Joyce , I don't machine quilt but did take a class and the one thing they stressed is not to use glazed cotton as the glaze will actually come off and gum up your machine. I do use glazed cotton for my hand quilting as I find it does not tangle and is nice and strong. I use YLI brand, which I find superior to others. But everyone has their own preference.

Re:Question?????

Joyce, I often use Rasant brand which is sewing cotton, and also use either Signature brand machine quilting cotton or my favourite is Superior Threads brand King Tutt quilting thread. It is lovely to use for hand quilting and machine quilting. I particularly use the King Tutt on anything good or special .

I use them because they are the brands readily available to me here at my usual quilting store. Well actually they replaced the Signature with the King Tutt so I started using that and like it more.
But I did baby quilts using the Rasant and they have been machine washed numerous times with no problem. Rasant of course is cheaper and has more on the spool than the others.

Hope that helps with what is available here in Australia

I have a question for all you bright people out there.
I have read all I can about machine quilting and am doing OK, I think BUT now I have read you should use Hand quilting cotton as it is stronger, and somewhere else I read you could use just ordinary sewing cotton. Now what should I use??? Confushion reigns. Let me know what you use, Please. Cheers Joyce

I like to do mine on by machine, but I know there are some purists here who do enjoy the hand work! So have fun.

This block was a block of the month at the quilt guild, which I loved. But after cutting it all out and trying it, everything was backwards , of course. So I put it away and pulled it out a year later and managed to figure it out, even got some points matching. I really liked it too and will have it out every xmas now. The Xmas ornaments are simple compared to trying this one. I am now going to try an english paper piecing . Should be a real challenge.
    Thanks for all your compliments.
