Anna, full sized on an old cotton bed spead is how my husband's grandmother did her crazy quilts. My first one was done that way using the recycled back from a worn out quilt that I took apart (it was tied).

Im sorry I missed seeing some of the last comments here. Its funny that we go to such lenghts to use up scraps and then go out and buy more fabric for sashing and edging and ooooops the bin is full again!!
I am making the blocks to donate to a group project. There are a few others working on the same type block. Maybe they will post pictures of theirs for us to see too.
I have never done this type of quilting by machine or in block size. I have always done it full size on an old sheet. Thats the way my mom taught me. For this I used newsprint paper which is easy to find in my daycare stash. ( once I realized it of course!!!)
If my thumb ever stops being a nuisance I will get back at it and make another batch.
    Hugs everyone

I love it that everyone it sharing and that Sue is asking for the help. So often I am too impatient to wait for others to give me ideas on what they think is nice to look at. I do like the colors you are using for this quilt. I love to see it when people use colors that are not in my stash. It gives me courage to buy things I wouldn't usually buy.
    Looking so good.

Well, Kathy I am in total agreement with that. Beauty is not always perfect. I also agree that if I make a design choice that ends up looking like a mistake to someone else then it was a choice. I do however believe that we make mistakes and then we have the option to decide if we want to make it a design choice or fix it. I would not have thought to just use the half square triangles like you did I would have just thought well I made a mistake I need to fix it, one way or the other. I think that is also a difference in people. I just wouldn't have thought to be able to adjust and use it, but that is what you did. You are very thoughtful and creative that way. My Creative bent is different. So in that aspect I do agree with Chris. I admire your quilt and look forward to your next project and to the time I finally get to make one myself.

I think what she is getting at is that we shouldn't keep pointing our our mistakes to others. Others aren't as apt to be as critical of our work as ourselves. Don't take away others enjoyment of your quilts. Each one I make is amazing to me, even if it isn't perfect. I am not perfect so why should my quilts be perfect. Beauty doesn't have to be perfect.

Hi Sue, Just love how the quilt is looking. I like the pieced border. Going from the photo, I would probably put the darker section of the V closest to the quilt. (like the bottom 2 in last photo.) OR all with the lighter colour to the quilt, whichever looks best. However we are going from a photo and in real life having them mixed may look fine.
Its going great. So pleased you are giving your camera a good tryout.

    Hi Kathy,
Just read your note reguarding design choices. Not sure if I believe Chris's theroy. I make mistakes all the time in quilting. They aren't choices, they are really mistakes...but on the other hand I always learn from them! Thats what makes all finished designs unique.
Thanks for sharing your quilt and the roads you took to finish it. It's very interesting.

    Sue,
This is going so nice with you your cameras help.
Last photo I love the first two V think i would just keep repeating those 2 color V . But then I also love the photo before that with the square between the green V .

Are either of those two calling out to you?

Re:previewing landscape

I read a conversation by Chris this morning at quilting weekly, reminding us quilters that we shouldn't call anything really a mistake in quilting. It is a design choice. Here are some of mine in this landscape quilt.

As in any quilt there are things that I probably would do different, if I was to do it again. As you can see there are blue strips at the top and the bottom. these are there because my dimensions didn't come out right after I changed from no sashing to sashing in my border. I could have made the sashing a little narrower on the side borders (and skipped the 1 strips), but decided not to do that.

Then I had forgotten that I hadn't squared up the sides of the landscape when I measured it. After I squared it up I had lost a inch in width. I didn't want to fool with strips that would finish 1/2 to compensate for the lose or make my top and bottom sashing narrower). (Note to make the center bigger than it needs to be or at least use a piece of muslin to sew the pieces to next time.) The remedy was to make the inner border strips on the sides 1/2 wider (I had aready cut them, but should find a use for 2 1/2 strips sometime.

Oh, there is another one; see the second block down on the right, Hills of Vermont , the medium green was suppose to be dark green. You ask what happened? Well, I pieced the half square triangles (in a strip or a block) before cutting them and when I went to press them, realized that I had the green bottom side up. I had a couple of choices: I could take each apart and resew, make a new set of half squares, or use them as they were. I chose the last option.

If you can't find the right ligher shade of a fabric, don't hesitate to try the back side of a fabric.

I'm going to post this at QW also.

Helena, the flying geese may be a good idea, but it is too late now.

    Kathy

    Hi Sue,

Me again was looking it over closer. i held a pcs. a paper up to my screen against your quilt. You could make it just like the fist row of your block. That would be the left side as we look at it. zthrn like i said earlier put solids in the corners.
Anyway you do it will be very nice!

Re:need input ladies

  • Re:need input ladies - 2007-09-25 11:39:02-04
You might want to draw the border on gragh paper before you make the final choice, to make sure it comes out even. The quilt is 6 blocks by 5 blocks, right? So that means it is 24 squares by 20 squares and you need to be able to divide those numbers by the repete. You need a border with a 2 or a 4 square repete.

The corners could be squares of the same color or half square triangles of the same colors.

  • Re:need input ladies - 2007-09-25 11:08:40-04
    Sue,
Try leaving the square out... v' point against v' point.no block between them. like the green V try then try the darker gold V rather than the light one.

    Just a thought
OK now i'm out the door, bye

Here we go ladies.like the V's pointing out. This one
is with both colours pointing out like Suzy's idea.

could put a plain square in between the v points

    Hi Sue,

Yes like that! you could even do 1 green V followed by the goldish color V . Really think thats what i'd do! Seems to finish it off. Again Great job

    Hi Sue,
Looking good! Your asking for ideas..wondering, if you would take the like ones (like the 2 dark green together) Now have the darker shade against the sashing and the points facing away. You would have the V points facing out. Your could use all the shades your working with and have a V point border. Need be, you could use a solid square in the corners.
    Hugs, Suzy

I like the 1/2 sq triangles with the dark outside, but I would like them matched if possible-like the blocks, sort of 2 yellow, 2 green etc

I like the first 1/2 square triangles, with the darker colour on the outside. Seems to flow with the pattern. Beautiful quilt, can't believe it's your first!

Re:need input ladies

  • Re:need input ladies - 2007-09-23 08:35:26-04
Well, it is hard to choose. They all look good. I guess my first choice would be the first triangle photo and the second and third squares down (squares turned 90 degree). that is similar to where the blocks come together. But I also like the other ones in that photo where dark and dark are together and light and light. How about this with the light on the outside instead of the inside?

Re:need input ladies

  • Re:need input ladies - 2007-09-23 03:09:00-04
I think the patched second border is a great idea. You could stick to squares, or half square triangles. If you have a bunch of those left over from making the quilt its a good way to use them up. OR..... you could try another new technique and sew the half square triangles together to make flying geese rectangles.
Your on the right track. I cant wait to see it finished. Lovely happy quilt

    Anna
