It could be the same method your mom used. It was a iron on binding product that you put over the edges of the applique pieces. Then you go back over them with a zigzig stitch. It turned out looking very elegant and it was really kind of easy once you got the hang of how to lay it out so you didn't have too many intersections. I will photo it soon, as I am making some pictures for some other things I need to up load to the computer this week. I just haven't had time to do that in the last six months. Now I should have so much more time to quilt and do the things I think are important.

The met hod is not a lot of fun but I do like they way the blocks turn out. My mom did a stain glass for me before I started trying to quilt and it was the wall hanging Noel for Christmas. She did it with another method where the black layed on top, she sas it's easier. Would love to see yours.

Is there a name for this block so I can get the sizes to cut the pieces? I have many, many scraps of my own, and inherited my Mothers stash.

Thanks for the info. We have a block of the month at our quilt guild, and someone wins all the blocks every month, and as you say no two sew the same. Some blocks you don't like to trim too much or you spoil it. This should be a big help in joining these squares. Of course all the ones I sew are able to be joined without a problem (Right!!!!!)

Hi Tennye, I thought that as well and was a bit reluctant to start making the card. But dont like to be beaten by a challenge so got to it. And hey! it was not so scary afterall. It went together so easily I am now on my third one. I think deciding on the picture/design is the hardest part, and that isnt really because you can do just any method you enjoy.
If you need the practical method of how to, just ask because we have worked it out - not all the same method but all have worked.

Another great project I will photo mine some day and show them. Love the batik fabrics. Not a fan of the method, but you did a great job. I keep thinking if I do it often enough it will grow on me, but so far not so much.

SEWING SQUARES TOGETHER

  • SEWING SQUARES TOGETHER - 2008-01-17 04:29:53-05
Was chatting with some of the gals the other night and they asked if I would post this info.... thought it would be helpful.
When more then one person is working on a project it is very hard to keep squares the same size everyone cuts and sews seams dif.... so here goes
    1. Cut a piece of freezer paper to the size the block should be.
    2. position the block centering it on the freezer paper by ironing onto the shiney side of the paper.
This way when you sew 1/4 seam this will help keep the seams even when you don't have a full 1/4 for the seam.
Note this needs to be done only to blocks that don't measure full size.
Sew blocks together - Then remove paper... this method should help keep your quilt square and go together with ease.
Good luck - girls hope this is of some help.

Do you struggle with matching colors?

    Hi everyone,

Do you struggle with matching colors in your quilts? Have you ever made a quilt that you felt was not quite right, and the colors did not seem to look as good as you thought they would together? This was something that I personally had some trouble with in the beginning of my quilting days. If you struggle with this too, then you might be interested in my latest post on the Quilting Weekly blog.
