yes with you there Joy. I have no problem with acknowledgements by email, phone, etc (in this busy, modern world) but it is nice to get AN acknowledgement.
If nothing else and at the barest of manners, to hear that the parcel has been received sets your mind at ease.
We all appreciate the work you put into the quilt, and it is sad that you are left to feel hollow from your loving gift.

Am I a bitch, or doesn't anybody else know how to send bulk emails? something along the lines of thanks for your gift which arrived safely, letter to follow. We know she can do emails and all the youngies should know how to add more than 1 address to it.My kids taught me that. When I was in Guides, we heard the story of Baden Powell , who said 'the gift isn't yours until you've sent a thank you note' worked with my kids -although I did let them telephone the senders - thought that way it got done!!

Have ou heard of enough is enough If she can not let you know she receives the presents, then you can not acknowledge that you heard she was expecting and not give anything from now on. There is such a thing as mnners, and I'll bet her Mother taught her better. Time is no excuse, you can find timde to do one card a day, it only takes a minute literally.

Joyce,
Thanks for your kind message. Unfortunately this mom is now on her third baby. I should have known better, especially since I knitted her first a girl (now 7) a lovely yellow and white layette. For her second, another girl (now 5) I crocheted a lavender and white layetter. Neither of which was ever acknowledged by mom , but grandma did tell me they had been received and how beautiful they were. Unfortunately grandma is visiting her family and friends in New Zealand so I must be patient and wait until she returns. Then I will know for sure whether the quilt arrived or not.
Hugs and looking forward to swapping country fabric noodles.

Helena, I know just how you feel. I have had the same thing happen to me, but it only happened once. I went months before I received a thank you for a baby quilt. I know it was received, because I delivered it! Grandma would not let me in the door, Mum and Baby were asleep.
I only know they liked it because I met them in the supermarket one day, months later and they mentioned it.
Seems these days, for new mums especially if it is their first baby, they are trying so hard to do everything right that everything else is completly forgotten. That's what I think it is anyway, me being nice. Anyway now I put a stamp addressed envelope and card in anything I post, with a note just to let me know if quilt has been received.

Thank you Pat and Joy for your notes.
In response to Pat's, I mailed it in the States, Myrtle Beach, SC to Houston, TX. The clerk told me it would take 2 days first class and no declaration was required. So off it went.
In response to Joy's, after 5 days we e-mailed our niece and asked if the gift had arrived. She did not respond to our e-mail. I'm not surprised as my husband's sister had sent her some baby gifts as well and had not had a thank you that same had arrived. The girl is just selfish.

I always ring people and let them know if an important parcel is on the way so they can look out for it, also you could slip in -'let me know when it arrives please that way if it's not there within the usual time you can contact Australia Post (or who ever your postoffice is) and start them looking for it.

Looks a lot easier than the one I tried to make which involved cutting darts in each side. I didn't cut them wide enough and the basket is nearly flat. this one would be great for rolls or scones, lollies....ooh I'm starting to get inspired (and hungry)

Did you mail the quilt? How long ago? Did you mail it from here or when you were in the States? I also heard that you should never put on the declaration that there is a quilt inside, just blanket or fabric or something like that. Apparently quilts disappear more often from the mail.

Hi Ruth
Guess one could say where there is a will there is a way. I am sure this hint will be very useful to so many of us. Thanks for sharing.
I have grips on the underside of my rulers but sometimes they still want to move - with a can of food on besides I am sure it will stay.
Re:Hint of the day lol
- Re:Hint of the day lol - 2008-03-11 15:40:25-04
Ruth, I can vaguely remember seeing something in a quilting shop that goes on top of your ruler. It looks like a rectangle of clear perspex attached to a door handle - the ones you pull. It alters the angle of pressure, I think it was for arthritics. Maybe hubby or someone else handy could make you one, you could probably also use those rails they put in the showers and buy steps for the oldies. Otherwise buy one of those things they use in milkbars to cut sandwiches, the resulting angle would be about the same.

Blueberies are expensive here now too. When I work at the fruitstand we sell wild ones for $4.00 for 1/2 pint, you would need at least 4 or 5 of them for a pie. I used to pick with my grandmother when I was young (many, many yeas ago) up around Haliburton or Sudbury.

Re:the potholders
- Re:the potholders - 2008-03-10 14:19:55-04
My specialty is light cheesecake and strawberry rhubbarb pie. I havent made blueberry pie is years. Blueberries are really hard to get and expensive in BC. Not like being able to pick wild ones as I did when we lived in Ontario. Those were just the best!!!
I think the pattern for the pie is too large. I may make it again but shrink the pattern on my computer first. You can find the pattern by googling pie in the sky quilt or potholders.
Re:the potholders
- Re:the potholders - 2008-03-10 14:04:11-04
They're beautiful Anna. Do you make blueberry pie? My specialty is apple, but I make applecrisp as much as pie any more. The oatmeal topping degests better than pastry.
the potholders
- the potholders - 2008-03-10 13:56:35-04
Here are three potholders made this past week. One, the pie in the sky was made as a prize for our family cookbook sales. The green and snowman ones are prizes for the noodle auction last week. They are not too bad for first tries at potholders.

Thanks ladies ! Yes i agree the links are fantastic. i do have the cutter that is the 2nd site Kathy . I have never been very happy with it. Maybe the user is at fault. But hmmmmmmmmm I love what was in the video. both If anyone ever finds where to get them i would be interested. The straight cutter in the video had a few advantages espicaly the fact that it holds the fabric so well.
I also had both wrists done but that was before quilting days. I might take your tip hubby / buddy . Not sure that it will work on my husband. He already thinks i have lost the plot.
I have got some clear film on one of my rulers but find it still moves with current situation. The can not only stabalizes the ruler but allows me to use less pressure. saves me a few aches lol

I saw a new cutter on Quilters TV. It is like a paper cutter, but it is for cutting strips. It is made by Fiskars.

I have ordered some fabric sheets form Jenkins co in US because they are a lot cheaper. I am going to make photo quilt, nd probably have an order for another one to sell. I suggested using one of the sheets on the back as well for the label.

He there.
I read that if your cutting matt warped, to spray it with warm water, then lay it flat between two hard areas. i.e. (a rock and a hard place -- just joshing Sis, couldn't help that one) but seriously that is what I read. Not the rock, but two firm places and let your matt dry.

thanks Ruth will have to try it sometime. The height of the bench might be helping make it easier too.I saw a hint on simply quilts to dab hot glue on the back of the ruler to make a 'foot' to stick to the fabric-let it cool before you use it though (lol)

Maybe you could try putting it in the sun to warm slightly then straight under something big and flat and HEAVY while it's still warm - worth a try if you're thinking you'll have to get a new one anyway. Otherwise could you cut a small straight one ou of this one buy a new one , then you have one for when you go to classes etc, not totally wasted then.

Re:Help with cutting Mat
- Re:Help with cutting Mat - 2008-03-08 21:38:24-05
I have the same problem, I keep hiding things under my mat and end up with a bump. I read somewhere to put out in the hot sun and heat will soften it into being straight again. I am not sure just my luck it would curl up its toes more. I bought a bargain mat for $10 the other day, was very pleased with myself until I got it home and realized it was in metric not imperial measurements. Now have a separate mat for card making.

I have vivid memories of my eldest boy walking in the church seeing everyone looking at him he promptly brought the pillow up to cover his face .. somehow he managed to make it to the alter without tripping. As some of you know i have had a shoulder op. I need to get lots of bias strips cut before next weekend for a course. I don't want to be the snail in the bunch. Anyway I moved my cutting to the kitchen bench and to help keep my ruler stable I am sitting a can of food on the ruler on the edge of the far side of the fabric. It pivots nicely to remove the cut strip and is easily positioned back over the fabric. Again using a pivoting action. With a slight realignment and the next strip is ready to be cut. I am finding this very useful in preventing slip happening less stress on my arms , shoulder etc. and less stress on me . hope this may help someone out there.
