I tried to post it in the gallery, but no luck. It boots me off the site everytime I try to post. So I am putting it here. It is alittle scarry, I actually tried something that isnt the typical 9 block. It is still blocks but atleast I am starting to venture out.
I also made to throw pillows witht this quilt and 2 quilted pillow cases. And to say so myself looks prett good on my bed. Yes finally I made on for myself. The picture isnt very good.

Hi Diane,
I just pm'ed to let her know I had mine done as well and would be sending them off soon. I bet they will look fantastic as a whole quilt. Do you have any pics to share here?
And my thumb is almost back to normal. It is healed but still a little tender. The side is ok, but it still hurts if I bump the end of the thumb. But not enough to keep me from doing the things I love. Yahooo, I can sew again!!! Life is great.
Thanks for asking.
Hugs,
Anna

I have finished my 15 blocks and sent them off.
When they all get together the quilt will be great.
Love your blocks and I am sure all of our blocks will blend well.
Hope your thumb is getting better.

A History Lesson, I have Googled Flanders Poppy, because I remembered something about it. The Flanders poppy has been a part of Armistice or Remebrance Day ritual since the early 1920's. During the First World War, the red poppies were seen to be among the first living plants that sprouted from the devestation of the battlefields of Northern France and Belgium. Soldiers folklore had it that the poppies were vivid red from having nurtured in ground drenched with the blood of their comrades.
The poppy soon became widely accepted throughout the allied nations as the flower of rememberance to be worn on Armistice Day.
They sell poppies in Australia also, and have done so since 1921. The funds raised are used on welfare work.
In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
John McCrae

In Canada it is also November 11th and is called Remembrance Day. The Legion also sells poppies to raise funds for veterans. I will be in Florida for Nov 11th so will be buying another poppy there. There is always one on a ribbon on my car mirror along with my breast cancer pin.(one of many)
The quilt is very lovely and you should be so proud to display it, and so happy to have your hubby beside you as you do!
Re:Finished project
- Re:Finished project - 2007-10-24 08:06:53-04
Marilyn no offense was taken in any way, please don't feel like it was. I was only explaining the distance.
Nov. 11 is what we used to call Armistis day here , but they have changed the name over the years. They call it Veterans Day now. I had a feeling the Poppy had some significance and it makes sense it is rememberance. We have a town close by that has Poppy fields and they have a Poppy festival in the spring.
Hugs to you both

Marilynn is wright the poppy is the symbol for rememberance, Our rememberance day is on the 11th November and my husband's birthday is also on the 11th Nov,so it is a happy time and a sad time for him.

Tennye, Sorry, what I wrote didnt sound good and I didnt mean it that way - written in a hurry but that is no excuse. I hope you do get to spend some lovely time with your family, however short it may be.
Maria will probably explain better, but I think the flowers are poppies - for remembrance. The symbol here for 11/11.

Marilyn,
I have not seen my granddaughters since July of 2006. They are 7 and almost 11. I will make as much time as I can for them when they are back in the states. They will be a two day drive from here so it will be closer than Germany but still not close. Ray my son in law won the Bronze Star while in Iraq the last time and after what happened the last two weeks over there he will most likely win another one. It is so sad that he has to see so much violence as a field medic you just get the worst of it and you have to put your life on the line every day to save others.
Ria, I don't mean to take away from your wonderful quilt and I am so glad you shared it with us. I wonder if the flower has a specific symbolism?

Maria,
Your wall hanging gave me goosebumps. You should have put it in the legacy competition earlier this year.I thought the sun was good too, both the ANZAC symbol and the words from Remembrance Day.Luckily my husband missed out on Vietnam, they pulled out birthdays either side of his. A nieces husband went though, he died earlier this year of bowel cancer. I agree war is terrible and we should do all we can to support those who went.I am so glad the Viet Vets are finally getting the recognition they deserve

Your work is so well done, hope I can do as good someday.

Way to go Ria,
What a wonderful wall hanging, especially with Novembr 11th coming upon us soon.
No one should forget what our brave men and women have done. Especially those who gave their lives in WWI and WWII.
My Dad served and fought in WWII and left behind many of his comrades. Thank God he came home to my Mum and helped raise me and my siblings.

The ones from the medical supply store are wooden, with a cup sort of dug out for the leg, but they are over $50. here and the ones I got are plastic of some kind (strong, made to hold bed) and were only $20. then had 20% off coupon!
I don't have handy man, but he's good at vaccuuming and dishes! Lets me quilt.

Hi Pat they are a great idea,
another way is to get blocks of timber, my hubby made some to go under our bed to make it higher for me after I had my back operated on a couple of years ago, now I use them under my table for when I'am cutting out it helps the back.Maws (Maureen)

Hi Suzyq,
No this is not my own design I am not that clever. I brought the pattern at a stiches craft show it is a Rosscraft creation no actual name given on the pattern.
I hang up in the front window every Anzac day and Vietnam Vets dayfor all to see and remember, Doug is very proud of it.
War is such a senceless thing we loose too many lives and we don't seem to be getting anywhere to having world peace.

Pat, What a great idea. I dont need that at home as my cutting table is high enough, but when we go away for our quilting weeks we are always saying we need something to raise the height of the table we use for cutting to make it more comfortable. Will have to see if we can source them easily in Aus. Does anyone know?

Just a tip for the sewing room. I recently purchased a set of 4 bed risers (look like little stands with an indent) from Linens and Things. The idea is to raise the bed for storage underneath. But I put them under the legs of my cutting table to raise it from 30 to 36 inches and it is much more comfortable on the back, arm and neck, expecially if cutting the pieces for a whole quilt at one time or any length of time. You can also buy them at a medical supply store, but at 3 times the cost.

My husband is a Vietnam Vet and we recently had a reunion with his mates. We were asked to bring something along to auction to raise money for troop funds, so I maade this wall hanging. On the bottom I embroidered Lest we forget . The auction was a great success, and fun was had by all. We all met in Bendigo (Victoria Australia) had losts of laughs plenty to eat and enjoyed catching up with old friends.
