I too do what Joy does, but I saw on a quilting programme the other day that the lady stitched it down with invisable thread, then you see nothing. I also do the fancy stitch Joy described in a variagated cotton makes it look great. I mostly use this on things I am in a hurry to finish, wall hanging, table runners and place mats, I usually hand hem quilts that will become a treasure. If machine sewing down on the top match the cotton in the bobbin to the quilt back and the top cotton to the binding.

- Re:video of hemming - 2007-12-29 10:22:24-05
Hi quiltin fairy,
I have hemmed a couple by machine, and what I did was sew the 1st part back to front. ie instead of laying on front then folding to back to hand stitch lay and sew on back then fold to front. I then picked a fairly open fancy stitch like a wavy line or zigzag so if the saw it it didn't matter-looked like part of the decorations and used an exact match for thread.that way it saved having to be perfect with the straight lines etc.
Hope it helps
Joy

Hi Quilting Fairy, Glad to see you found us here at creative quilting! I do hope someone here will be able to help you out. (this is Chris from Quilting Weekly) I still don't have an answer yet, but this is a much larger group here, so hope you do find that answer soon.
Is there a reason your friend is so persistent about doing it all on the machine? Is it for time sake? It does seem that the hand method is preferred by most quilters. Just curious is all.
And again welcome to the club. I hope to catch you on the chat some time it would be lovely to talk with you.

Hi Quiltin Fairy. I have never felt happy with hemming my bindings by machine. I guess you have to sew in the ditch but to keep it even on both sides would be the difficulty. I am like you - always do mine by hand hemming.
Sorry I am no help to your friend. But someone else may be able to give you some helpful information.

I have a friend that is trying to learn how to hem a small quilt with turning it under and sewing it so the seam doesn't show with a sewing machine. I've been looking every where but cannot find anything:be it pictures or a video of how this is done. I live over 2000 miles from her so I can't really show her in person.
And doubt I could as I hem all mine and have for years by hand hemming only.
Any help on this is more than welcome.
Thanks

What a lovely quilt.... sometimes we have to just step back and look at things and they will become clear as to what needs to be done.
This seems to be what has happened... your quilt is
a work of art. You should be proud of the results.
Happy Sewing......

The people that received my quilts this year really loved them. I'm glad they don't mind that they are far from perfect. It probably doesn't hurt that I asked what kind of quilt they wanted. I decided that it was better that the quilts weren't a complete surprise. Color and theme are important to some people.

Yes I enjoyed making it as I felt that Sue had made it specially for me and that became the theme for my perpetual calender wallhanging and it will be used by future generations too. Something special from Sue.

[file] This is my angel quilt that I started some time ago and struggled to have an idea to get the blocks together to my liking. I spent the day yesterday and now have the centre finished. It is a dbed quilt and now I can start the borders. It was fun spending the day sewing. Have not done any sewing for a week or two.

Kathy, you did a fine job on your quilt. I am impressed! I haven't gotten one thing done in the last 6 weeks! So my hat is off to you.
I think what Chris is saying is that 1) don't point out your flaws/errors and BELIEVE in yourself. I look at all the errors as a learning experience. I certainly know what to do next.
Well, must run. I am working on my Christmas present quilt that is a bit late? My kids expect that from me. I'm always behind - ya know, the behinder I get, the behinder I get.
Happy New Year everyone!
Kathy, I think you did a bang up job and I would be honored to have received that quilt!

I have posted a bunch of photos in the gallery lately. Probably over kill to post so many close-ups, but can't post much info in the discription box about sources. Plus, over all view doesn't show the flowers well.Post edited by: kquilts, at: 2007/12/27 21:57

Kathy,
It turned out beautiful. I am looking forward to your next venture. I will most definitely start much earlier this next year for Christmas. I have one top complete and the other about three fourths complete. I will not be giving complete quilts for Christmas. I did however get two robes done on the embroidery machine and made two very cute little bags as well on the embroidery machine. So they will not go home empty handed and the quilts will go in the mail in a few weeks since they are going to be tops by the time the girls get here for their Christmas. I hope to have pictures of them to post as tops and then again as quilts.
