I put them away and I will get them out tomorrow. My husband will be home and I am going to have him help me with a display plan that I can place in the corner where the to wall colors join. Thank you for the suggestion. Debra

Re:Log Cabin Blocks

  • Re:Log Cabin Blocks - 2008-01-10 04:28:13-05
My issue is we have changed house colors to a latta/taupe color main wall, and a wild current/cranberry accent walls, so I am unsure about the color sellections or as it has been suggested try to use what I have and colors to go with the walls.Hum.

Re:Log Cabin Blocks

  • Re:Log Cabin Blocks - 2008-01-10 05:59:34-05
They look great to me, but as Chris said walk away and let them rest. Or you could do as I do and just leave them there for a while, until you see what you think you want to change. Sometimes it will take me a day or two, others just a few hours. I like to live with them for a little before I decide if I like them or not. Some times it just grows on me and I realize it was good all along.

  • Re:Log Cabin Blocks - 2008-01-10 04:36:09-05
You can always create a border that will be the final blending with the walls etc. The more colours in the top, the easier to blend everything together in my opinion. Pat

Keep making Blocks, and placing them, walk away, come back, a fresh look will appear to please your eyes.

this is very true! Make the blocks and arrange them then walk out of the room, for a couple of hours. (no peeking!) Then when you come back sometimes you see things differently. It is best to view you quilt from afar. So don't stand so close to it, and your perspective will change as well. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to seeing more blocks!

Too cute! Postcards are so much fun to make and send! (And of course to receive is a joy too!) I see a whole new swap coming up.

Not that I have the time to organize this, but wouldn't it be fun to send postcards to each other here at creative quilting?

If someone were interested in organizing the names and address of those interested in a postcard swap we could start our own collections of these little treasures!

Anna Diane, Wow!! Fantastic, Not a quick job either of those quilts, I guess I am a bit of a Speedy Gonzales and when I get the notion to make something I want to do it Now. So no time consuming quilts for me.
But change of plans I am going to sit down right now and cut all my scraps into 2 1/2 squares, I saw a quilt in a magazine this afternoon and I am off to have a go at it. Might have to get some more scraps though?? I have cut up all the scraps from the christmas fabrics into 2 squares ready for something later in the year. I read somewhere to cut up your scraps and pack them into sealed plastic bags in sizes and you will use them more than if you put them in a box, my box is now a basket and a box, overflowing, I was saving them for applique, but still too many. Going to go now and start cutting up.

Re:POSTCARDS

  • Re:POSTCARDS - 2008-01-08 09:37:43-05
Yes, those pencils. I coloured the mountains, bridge, land and sea, then went over it very carefully with the paintbrush with water and a drop of fabric medium (though it does seem to set permanently without the medium anyway by setting with the heat of the iron). Just have to do it slowly so it doesnt get too wet and the colours run. An iron close by is helpful for if it seems to be getting too wet.
Chris they are a set of what looks like coloured pencils with a paint brush in. Just called watercolour pencils, and put out by the usual suppliers of coloured pencils - in Aust they are Faber-Castel, Derwent, Mont Marte etc. Dont know if US has those brands?

Re:POSTCARDS

  • Re:POSTCARDS - 2008-01-08 08:56:57-05
Marilyn, Fantastic, really lovely, what a great idea. An artist, were the watercolour pencils the ones where you colour in and then go over with a brush in clean water and the pencil dissolves sort of into paint?
I am thinking of making some postcards to sell at the hospital for Valentines Day, you all give me good ideas too. Joyce

Like your quilt..... as quilters we sure find ways of using left over fabric.... Nothing goes to waste.

I too like the idea of you using black between the squares.... I have found that by using black it help the colors pop.

Happy Scrap quilting..... I too am working on my 3 scrap quilt.

    Here is my postcard.
It features Pumicestone Passage which separates Bribie Island from the mainland, the bridge connecting us to the mainland, and the Glasshouse Mountains in the background. They are on the mainland but can be seen from the Island. I used watercolour pencils to colour the features, then embroidered the outlines. And appliqued the sails on the boat.

I like that idea to. If she likes fall colours then even a dark brown for the sashing then strips of scraps like in Diane's would look good. Or you could do prairie points, all different colours after a little wider plain border. They are fun.

Wow, is all I can say! You did a fantastic job with this quilt. I love the way you used different designs is each section. That adds some real interest to the quilt. Sometimes scrappy quilts look a bit busy, but this pattern gives you places of interest with the different style of blocks.

I love it. Makes me want to go and use up some of my large bags of scraps!

Re:A Scrappy quilt Im working on try #3

  • Re:A Scrappy quilt Im working on try #3 - 2008-01-07 03:33:42-05
Chris' idea is very good. Black would look very good. If you prefer, navy blue or a dark green could work as well; I have used both. Strips like Anna's would frame it.

Re:A Scrappy quilt Im working on try #3

  • Re:A Scrappy quilt Im working on try #3 - 2008-01-07 02:47:59-05
    Anna,

Just a thought here for your borders. I like the black you have separating the blocks, so add a narrow black border then piece together your scraps for the final border. Which would tie it together with the center.

A Scrappy quilt Im working on

  • A Scrappy quilt Im working on - 2008-01-06 19:04:43-05
One more project I got some time to work on this holiday is a scrappy quilt I took a series of workshops on last year with my quilting group. I made the mistake of showing it to my daughter in November and she staked a claim to it. Then of course because it was for my only daughter I went out and bought some fabric to make it even more the colors she loves. (Fall)
So instead of using up a ton of scraps I have strips of fat quarters coming out my ears. HELP!

Im showing it not finished because soon I will be asking for help in deciding on borders. It will be 2 more blocks wide so 5x5 and then borders. It should fit a queen size bed with room for bed hogging hubby to share. You can see a pile of squares on the floor under the quilt. (I have to get a bigger planning wall sheet!

    Here is my postcard.

I took a picture of the Chicago skyline, and combined it with another picture of party balloons. Then I added the text and came up with this photo to print on the fabric for my postcard. I then took fabric markers to add some color on the happy Birthday part of the balloon.
