I love it the way it is ; I think the two different blocks draw your eyes to the center. Sure an other color might go slightly better, but gives it personality. If you look at old quilts, women put in what they had and it made for very interesting quilts. Quilts don't have to be perfect in color or construction.
The most important thing to remember is the fun you had doing it together. Each quilt is a learning experience.

Lovely job! Looks great , but it looks like 2 blocks are blue and don't quite match the other green ones. The ones above and below the centre block. I personally would remake them, or move them to the sides if not enough fabric, to take them out of the direct line of vision. But the quilt is beautiful. How are you doing the border? Pat

Helena, I love your kitty quilt. Great work. It can be a lot of fun to frame a pillow panel to make a quilt. It can be simple or elabrate.

- Re:Using the gallery - 2007-09-13 15:37:49-04
Helena, there havent been any new quilts posted to the gallery for a while because of the problem it is having. Last ones submitted were Sue90's Festival of Quilts ones. Just have to wait till Simon is able to fix it. (Think he is away at the moment?) In the meantime we can use Show and Tell. Once it is fixed we will all rush the gallery.

The quilt top is finished. There have been a few changes. Jo, I didn't really like the light sunrise block either, but I didn't know what to do about it, since it was to be my signiture block. After I got the border strips sewn, I realized that I could use the Birds in the Air block at the botton center just as well for the signiture block (not done yet). So I ripped out that block and replace the light fabric with a solid green.

Love hearing about all these UFO's flying about the world, how easy it is to start a new project, the excitment keeps us on a high for days, it must be the challenage.
Feel sure all your Christmas gifts will be truly treasured Cheflatte.
I am also excited you have bought black white material, I have had it mind for sometime it will be stunning.
You do yours first, I have no material and too much on the conveyor belt, things to be doing.
Remember you have made promises to yourself with your UFO's look forward to photos.
Bye now Jo

Well, I wanted to write the first time I saw some of these posts however I was busy and just couldn't. So now I shall, Joyce I am so proud of you for digging into the box and pulling out UFO's and getting them completed. I have said every year for the last three years that is what I will do and I will not purchase any new fabric for new projects until these are all complete. Well, as I am sure you know I have started far more than I have completed. I will be doing a better job of that now though because I need to make Christmas great and I have a very limited supply of money. So the UFO's have become the desired gift for someone special this Christmas. I figure if I put at least two hours a day into working on UFO's I should be able to get quilt a few finished by the time they are needed. I have one ready to quilt and I am putting it on the frame this week if I can move the frame to do so. I will use the pantograms I got with the frame since I am not comfortable with using free motion on the frame yet.
I gotta tell you last week I purchased black and white fabric for a black and white quilt. I have no idea what pattern I will use I just have wanted to make one for years and bought the fabric so I would make it. Shame on me for not doing what I said I would and not making purchases for new projects.Anyway Congrats on the completion!!!!!!

Joyce, that is really good that you are getting to the ufos in your closet. This one turned out so pretty. We are all inspired to do the same. Maybe we need a special section for ufo completion bragging. That might get the rest of us off our butts and doing them too.

Re:Drafting Question
- Re:Drafting Question - 2007-09-09 14:48:41-04
Joyce you are so right they are one of the easiest quilts I have ever made. This is not my first it is just the first one I have done that actually has a pattern to it. This is also the one quilt that my children have made as well. The daughter who has only one interest and that is music has one made for herself. LOL Even my middle daughters boyfriend has made one. We lovingly call them clothset quilters. It is a family joke.
I would buy patterns all the time but so often when I do I never end up using them or they are too difficult to understand. My nest challenge is the star on the top of the tree. It is quarter square triangles so I am working on that one now. If 1 1/2 inches is for the half square so I am going to try 2 1/4 and see how that works out. At times when I work on these things I really wish I had understood math a little better. Talk to you later.

Joyce, the wall hanging is so cute. Good on you for finishing a UFO. That was my goal this year as well, and I have done a couple but not what I had hoped. Oh well, always next year. So pleased you are enjoying the walking foot also. It does make a huge difference to be able to machine quilt with the right tools.
Joy thanks for posting the poem too.

Re:Drafting Question
- Re:Drafting Question - 2007-09-09 11:12:24-04
I have bought a pattern for a rag quilt which has pieces cut on the bias. My patterns says to sew each seam twice, you could also do a smaller stitch to give it a good seam hard to fray past the stitch line. I have washed my quilt many times as I use it all the time, either for me or my dogs and cats dig holes in it to get comfortable (as they do)
cheflatte, the cutting out is the most time consuming part of the whole process, once you have it all cut out it goes like a breeze and you will have it hung in the shop before you know it. Sounds like a great pattern. I too don't buy patterns, just try to figure it out for myself, you are often able to from a picture.
Joyce, Australia.

Oh, I hadn't noticed until you mentioned it. I liked the signiture line so I could share a little without writing everytime. Guess I had better start signing.
I tried to add signiture line. It may have been turned off.

Jo, the poem Joyce referred to is 'My country' by Dorothear Mackellar
it goes like this
My Country
by
Dorothea Mackellar
(1885 - 1968)
spacer
spacer
The love of field and coppice,
Of green and shaded lanes.
Of ordered woods and gardens
Is running in your veins,
Strong love of grey-blue distance
Brown streams and soft dim skies
I know but cannot share it,
My love is otherwise.
I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror -
The wide brown land for me!
A stark white ring-barked forest
All tragic to the moon,
The sapphire-misted mountains,
The hot gold hush of noon.
Green tangle of the brushes,
Where lithe lianas coil,
And orchids deck the tree-tops
And ferns the warm dark soil.
Core of my heart, my country!
Her pitiless blue sky,
When sick at heart, around us,
We see the cattle die-
But then the grey clouds gather,
And we can bless again
The drumming of an army,
The steady, soaking rain.
Core of my heart, my country!
Land of the Rainbow Gold,
For flood and fire and famine,
She pays us back threefold-
Over the thirsty paddocks,
Watch, after many days,
The filmy veil of greenness
That thickens as we gaze.
An opal-hearted country,
A wilful, lavish land-
All you who have not loved her,
You will not understand-
Though earth holds many splendours,
Wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country
My homing thoughts will fly.
Dorothea Mackellarits very emotive isn't it. I guess each country has its own stuff that tugs the heartstrings

Very sweet, Joyce, the poem unknown to me.
You did so well to turn out your UFO, why is we sometimes get the urge to finish UFO. Sure you will have inspired others to look through their UFO.
Helena,I use other fabric for Wall Hangings, small sample quilts, but for quilts cotton, flanel, or even fleece although I have not worked with fleece.
Enjoy Show tell, Bye now Jo

Joyce,
What a lovely quilt. The more I see of member's quilts, the more inspired I am to keep on learning to quilt. Do you only use 100% cotton, or do you mix and match?

Well, I have the top mostly cut out and I will start on the back today. I will let everyone know as soon as I get it finished and then when I can I will take pictures. It will be hanging in the store for a month or two.
BTW has anyone noticed our signature is gone. I never sign it because of the signature I guess now I will need to.

I promised myself this year I would finish my UFO's, well it is only September and I have done one. I started it a few years ago for my daughter to use in her room at the Child Care Centre. She does not even do Child Care now so I have a new wall hanging.
It is called I Love a Sunburnt Country. It is the name of a poem here that every child learnt in our day, not sure if they do now. I had made lots of mistakes so proves I have learnt a lot in the two years while it was in the box. It is not square, but I still love it. I have hand quilted most of it, but with the new walking foot finished it off in a rush. You have to Love that walking foot.Well into the box again see what else is there?
