Thanks, I am glad you like it! The technigue is called trapunto. The Tumbling Blocks were appliquied onto the background then stuffed lightly before the last appligue stitches were added to add dimension. There is no pattern for the wall hanging, I just worked on this as inspiration urged!
The tumbling blocks pattern can be found at: http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/shows_qlt/article/0,1805,HGTV_3876_1751190,00.html
Feel free to ask questions, and I'll try to answer, if you want to try the technique.
    Have fun!

  • Re:Kaleidoscope pillow top, finished - 2007-07-18 13:25:36-04
As with the kaleidoscope block, it is a good way to try out new or different techniques, on a small scale. Then it is just a matter of finding a fabric that will appeal to that person, as well as the design.
Anna, if you are like most of us, you will have lots of techniques or blocks you are keen to try. You may become Pillow Queen
Sue's dresden plate one is another good one that could be easily made to appeal to a young person. Hers is so effective. As Jo said, you will receive plenty of ideas.

Re:previewing landscape (contrast)

  • Re:previewing landscape (contrast) - 2007-07-18 13:09:02-04
As Jo said, we do all see it differently, and especially when we are going on a photograph. I like the sunrise/sunset corner blocks, which I think must be the ones she is talking about. I would think that doing any darker or more red may overpower the softness of the landscape. My feeling is that the arrangement you have now will work even if you are not able to move those other two around. (I did realise they werent the same even tho that is what I said. Meant similar.) And the navy blue sashing will help there too.
It is pleasing to the eye (how artistic a statement is that!!!) and the colours seem well distributed.
Kathy if you are happy with it, go ahead and construct it. We are all so keen to see the top finished.
And thank you for trusting us with making comments. That block moving tea party of Jo's would have been such fun. Good thinking Jo.

This is so cool!!!! I want to learn how to do this one! Is it very hard? Let me know I think it would be a very cool technique to learn.

    Sue,
I too have made my Christmas cards, for several years. I want to make some of the post cards and my boss at the Bernina store has made them so I am going to get her to teach me what she can. They used the serger as well as the embroidery machine on the ones she made.
    I still love yours though.

Kathy I would like to come back again on this one, I have just printed pic of your quilt.
I know we all see things differently, but on my print out, the top and bottom bright corners detract from the overall theme, throws it out of kilter. I have used crayon to darken them. Maybe you could try and cover them with the same colour as 5 down, try more red, that to me would balance it, yes I think looking again the red. To my eye it then frames your landscape.
Will that make it too uniform to you.
There is only one answer Kathy, you will have to have us over to a Block Moving Tea party.
Keep trying, you will get it to look right when YOU look at it.
    Jo

Those blocks aren't the same pattern, but they are similar. But if I was to move one, I can't figure out which to exchange it with. I will look some more before I sew it.

Sunbonnet Sue is a must, I think the little lad is Overall Bill, thats what I called him in my quilt.
No doubt one of them likes Cats, if you do a back view it is quick. Small log cabin with a small pic of teddy or animal in the centre, it is always a hit.
Have fun, feel sure you will receive many ideas. Jo

What did you use to make the back (design wall) for your shelves? It looks like foam core..or is it something else? Great Idea!

Re:previewing landscape (contrast)

  • Re:previewing landscape (contrast) - 2007-07-17 20:51:18-04
Kathy, I think it looks better balanced now. The reds are better spaced, and the lights seem more balanced too. The two bordering the top right corner are very similar. Do they look right in real life? Oh, when I looked again they are different colours. I had copied and pasted then printed the two versions side by side and my colours are a bit out. You may like to look at those two and see if they are too noticeably similar in colour value, because of being the same design.
I so like your landscape, It is going to look fantastic when finished.

After reading all the posts I realised that some of us see different things. The girls said they saw a parachute, I did not I saw a Hot Air Balloon, like the ones floating around the sky in Melbourne on a Sunday Morning. It is beautiful, what a lucky grandson, but also what a lucky Grandma, all those little people wanting a pillow. Sunbonnet Sue good for grandaughters.

Re:Kaleidoscope pillow top, finished

  • Re:Kaleidoscope pillow top, finished - 2007-07-16 16:06:33-04
Thanks everyone for your lovely words. I am enjoying quilting more now because I always have someone to share it with, whether its good or bad.
I am going to make 7 more pillows. One for each of my other 6 grandkids and one for my best friends little girl who is feeling more like a grandkid every time I see her!!
Does anyone have any suggestions for pillow tops that are unique or just really pretty. I think Im going to turn the 4 practice log cabin blocks from the tie quilt into a pillow top for one of my grandsons. That qualifies as unique and I have never done a log cabin before. I think at least one of the girls pillows will be appliqued in some way. And thats as far as Ive gotten so far. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated. Hummm, as I write this I bet I could do a large bug jar or four small jars and turn that into a pillow. So really only need 4 more ideas.

    Thanks all,
    Anna

  • Re:Finished Dresden plate cushion - 2007-07-16 08:18:52-04
    Hi Cheflatte,
The Dresden Plate i do you place right sides together, fold each petal lengthwise, then using a 1/4 piecing foot, stitch across the widest part and then snip off the corner.
You then the folded wedge right sides out positioning the seam in the centre to produce a point and finger press. You stitch and press all the wedges like this.
I learnt this at mt lessons.
    Bye for now
    Sue

Fat Quarters for the Bookcase Quilt

  • Fat Quarters for the Bookcase Quilt - 2007-07-16 01:53:19-04
I just receievd the downloads for the Bookcase class. Super! What a nice gift, Michelle Chris and Simon. I was thrilled to have won the refund too. Again, Thanks! Now I can register for another class.

I was listening to the Skypecast Michelle and Chris did. I was the one (or at least one ) of the people who asked if a fat quarter would work for the background.

I wnated to update y'all and let you know that I did indeed get the background form one fat quarter.
I had to piece a few of the pieces, and there were only scraps too small for a mouse to use left over.

I have noticed in many older, vintage quilts, individual pices have been pieced. So I feel like I am in the company of our quilting foremothers who made do with what they had in many cases.

So...where there's a will, there's a way! and the fat quarter was the way this time.

Hello Sue, I have tried Ann the Gran but she does not have patterns in JEF which my machine needs and I don't have the programme to change the patterns over. I really have enough and after the weekends shopping of 151 sets and with the others I have I really cannot justify buying any more, promised hubby I will cool it for a while. He thought I meant the fabric shop as well, but alas he was wrong. I am gong to try and find the cards in my local scrapbooking shop to put the stitcheries into they look really professional. I usually just trim around them really closely and stick them on the front of the card with double sided tape. Yours much nicer. I think they are the same as the ones used for cross sticheries.
I have bought a whole heap of patterns over the internet and once you have worked it out it is really easy to download. I have never had any trouble with charging either, I use PayPal and it is really easy. Joyce

I have to say these are fabulous. I make cards with rubber stamps and these are so much nicer. Wow I guess I nned to save some money and get the embroidery module for my machine. I work for the company so I get it half price, but still it is a lot, when you know you are fixing to lose the job that pays every month. The teaching gig is still off and one with small classes, I know it will get better when people get to know me.

This story has a happy ending. I gave Jake his pillow last night at a family bbq. He was thrilled. I got extra Nana hugs and kisses, which is something, since he is almost 7 and doesnt really kiss girls, ya know.
So thats 1 down, 6 to more to go. And that's only if I ignore my own kids whinning and dont count them as wanting a pillow too. What have I started?!?!?!?

Sue, these cards are beautiful. I too make cards but not as lovely as these. Handmade cards are really appreciated by those that receive them.
Do you stitch onto fabric and then put into bought card stock or have you cut the cards as well?
Last night I could not resist a sale on the internet for 151 design sets of patterns from http://www.theembroiderymarket.com/ It took me a while to download that many patterns and I used up my download limit for the month in 14 days so had to decide to purchase more. I am new to broadband and love how quick it is but did not think I would use it all that quick. Have to wean myself of the internet for a while.
I have attached a bear which is one of the designs I downloaded. The 151 sets cost $12US which was $14.80AU. Just the bear alone was worth that much, I thought.
