Something to try with a sample first. I don't know anything about chelilling.

  • Re:Drafting Question - 2007-09-07 17:49:51-04
I guess that is something else to experiment with. When chenilling, the fabric or strips are cut on the bias, and then are wet and brushed with a brush to fray. It works well. But I havent tried bias on a rag quilt. It will be good to find out the answers.

Kathy - I think you are right . Don't think the seam cut on the bias will fray . I have made a rag quilt and it isn't cut on the bias.......

    Good point.

PS I did make some 4 patches in my quilt for contrast and interest.

My only concern is will the edges fray as they sould cut on the bias? I have never done a rag quilt.

Anna ,You are awesome!!!!! Thanks so much I was going to try that tonight after things settle down from dinner and stuff. I gotta tell ya I have been thinking about that for three days and I should have just sat down and cut it out and tried it. I will post my picture as soon as I can get this one finished. I hope to have gifts under the tree, I have seen a picture of a pattern, but you know how that goes I would rather try and figure it out than buy a pattern and wait for three weeks to get it.

Re:Drafting Question

  • Re:Drafting Question - 2007-09-07 07:31:20-04
You want your finished square made up of 2 triangles to be 8 inches. Right? And you want the triangles themselves as they are sewn together into a square to be ragged. I think when you add 7/8 inch that includes the 3/8 seam. with leaves a half inch to make up for the corners. So, to get a one inch seam instead of a 3/8 inch seam you would make your square 1-1/2 inches bigger than you want to finish with. A 9-1/2 inch square should cut and sew into an 8 inch block.
Now does this make sense to you? It always sounds more complicated than it should.
ps, I tried it. I cut a 9-1/2 inch block, cut it diagonally, sewed it back together with a 1 inch seam and it came out 8 inches square.
    Hugs, Happy ragging

Drafting Question

  • Drafting Question - 2007-09-07 04:21:14-04
Okay ladies I have a problem and I am not a big math person so I am really struggling with this one. I am working on a rag quilt and I want it to look like a Christmas tree. However I can't figure out how to make the half square triangles the right size. I know with a regular block I would add 3/8 or 7/8 depending on the size of the block. With the rag quilt I want the rag appearance to be in the triangle as well so that the tree looks raggy. I hope I am making myself clear I have noticed sometimes people don't know what I am talking about. If my blocks are 6 inches I have to cut them 8 in order to make the rag edges. Then for the triangles I get messed up would I add another 2 7/8 to get it right . So then it would be 10 7/8 cut square and then cut that in half crosswise.
    Thanks for your help.

The quilt is gorgeous. I love the ones with lots of white to bounce the colors off

Helena, I found the biggest challenge to uploading a picture in the forum was figuring out how to resize it on my computer.

Try looking in the program that stores your pictures for an edit or modify link. In there you should be able to resize to email size of 640x480. Once you do that you use the browse rectange and button at the bottom of the regular add a post page and it uploads like a dream most of the time.
    Hope this is some help
    Hugs, and good luck

I have a program (free from the web) called Picasa. All pictures are loaded there. It took me two tries to get the picture uploaded because I didn't know what the limits on dimensions were. So, I had to export the picture and resize the pixels. Then it uploaded to the forum message. It could have been smaller, but didn't know it would look so big!
Good luck with your pictures. You can do it!

Thank you all for your lovely comments. Yes, the scrap idea is great! I should have done it that way, but tried to plan it and ran into some problems. So, using scraps is the best idea for this quilt.
    Thanks again!

This is lovely, love the colours.
A good way to use up all our scraps, maybe we should have a scrap bag swap, say scraps that could be held in a bundle/ball in two hands, pieces no smaller than 2 inchs.

    Thanks, Helena

That is a very beautiful quilt, thank you for sharing. I agree it would be a great way to use up some small scraps. I have dozens of triangles I need to use up some day. Maybe I could do the little squares with half square triangles.

Nana\'s Garden Quilt variation from Quilt in a Day

  • Nana\'s Garden Quilt variation from Quilt in a Day - 2007-09-04 04:59:44-04
    Hi Everyone,
Well, after 6 years I finally finished the quilt I promised my daughter. It started out as a twin or single size for her dorm bed when she went off to university in 2000. In 2001 she moved to an apartment and had a double bed. So, I was thinking I was safe and had enough material. Well, then she bought a King sized bed and I just put the project away thinking I would never finish it.

This spring she announced her wedding plans to her bf of 7 years and the wedding was 8/24/07. I decided to finish it an give it to her as a wedding present. I had to add more borders and even a 12 patch square to make it all come together, but she was so happy when she received it.
Thanks for letting me share it with you!

    available.
You are so quick, don't blink girls, or you will miss
    Joyce's next project.
I have only done hand Japanesse folded, it is fun to do, takes longer than your 6 minutes. Thank you for sharing, going to have a look at the site.

I have been researching Japanese Folded quilting this morning and have found so much information. There are patterns for bags, placemats, table runners, lots of things. I am now going to make a bag before I tire of it for a while.
The patterns were more difficult of course than mine done in the hoop ones.
I bought the designs from Designs in Stitches and Australian, digitizer. I have others of her patterns for Machine Quilting, and little purses and pouches of which I have made many. hhtp://designsinstitches.com
If you do machine embroidery its worth a look.
Each circle takes from 4 to 6 minutes to sew out, really quick. I love cheating .Post edited by: JHPym, at: 2007/09/03 19:45

I have done a placemat this time, in the Christmas Colours. I have sewn down the petals by machine in this one and the back looks good as well. With the pattern of the petals on the back. Each time I do something new I think of another good idea, the sewing down of the petals would look good in variagated cotton. I hope you like this one too.

    Hi Joyce,

I like very much. This looks like Japanese reverse quilting. If you PM me your email i can send you the directions that I have. My petals are all stitched down by hand. Makes a pretty pattern on the back side. Do yours have small squares of the blue material on the back center?

Nice job and the colors a very pretty.

In my last post about embroideries I said I was going to cool it buying patterns for a while. Well must be a while, I have just bought another new one. I am looking for quick easy ideas for Christmas things I can sell so am looking for honest opinions on this table runner. It is made as circles on the embroidery machine with batting and it is quilted. Then sewn together with normal machine. I am not sure yet how to treat the folded over bits, I have sewn down by hand one end and left the other, really cannot see the difference. I will post one done in Christmas Fabric later. What do you think?Post edited by: JHPym, at: 2007/09/02 18:43
