Here is another picture showing how fast the river was running. The kids thought it was great fun. Nana thought she had lost her mind volunteering to supervise them in that water. Good thing there are big rocks to hold onto or Tori would have been on a lovely ride over the rapids. you have no idea how hot it is then if you wish for 31c. While camping last week with the grandkids it was 42c. The only way to manage was to put our lawn chairs in the river where there was some shade from a tree and relax. It was a little hectic with 6 grandkids and the river running high, but we managed to not loose even one over the rapids.Post edited by: usannda, at: 2008/08/22 15:53

Well Anna, I work by Lens Mill which is a discount store here. Every summer they have a tent sale, and I bought 4 yds for 9.99, 3 yds for 7.78, 3 yds for 7.78 and 3yds for 7.40 , all Timeless Treasures, which I like, and one matches a fabric I already have, in the same line.
Next Feb when I retire they will notice a drop in sales. My friend will have to phone me when the tent sale starts.
12yds for $40.63 including tax , who could resist?

It is turned under, but the bigger pieces had the freezer paper underneath and the stems had the freezer paper on top. Have not tried raw edge YET! But I plan to learn everything before I use all my fabric, about age 125. Except I just bought another 12 yards on sale, bored on my lunch hour, so spent $40.00 selfishly on beautiful fabric.

Tennye then you are looking too close, and being too critical of your own work. I figure I am human and certainly not perfect so how could my work be? And who is going to look that close and actually notice other than yourself?

Ok Marilyn, I will see what I can do about taking a picture. I think it is the one I have layered waiting to be quilted, suppose to be done by now. So I will see if I can lay it out and take a picture tomorroq. It is pretty, but my corners are not exact either, apparently nobody's were ( at the retreat), there is a flaw in the pattern.
I have signed for next years retreat to learn New York Beauty, learn paper piecing from a pro! Now that will be another challenge.
And you can call it a mud map if you want, I figured out what you meant without a problem.
Re:Floral Noodles
- Re:Floral Noodles - 2008-08-19 11:49:55-04
My definition of Mud Map. Very Aussie thing to say. Out in the bush, when asking for directions, they always drew a map in the dirt, then if it had been raining would have been a mud map.
I like this definition Marilyn's Mud Map her directions for her quilt. Cheers Joyce
Sewing machine features
- Sewing machine features - 2008-08-19 11:08:08-04
I hope it is ok to mention this here.
Over at Quilting Weekly this week Chris is leading a topic on sewing machines. What features you have or would recommend to someone new to quilting and looking to buy a sewing machine or anyone thinking of replacing their machine. Why not pop over there and let people know what machine features you would recommend. See if we all have the same basic needs (and wants).
It could prove to be a great help for anyone looking at buying a new machine, particularly if they are new to quilting and dont know what features to look out for. And a place to refer people to if they come on to this site asking about buying a machine.

I love so many aspects of quilting but I have to agree with those of you who have said I hate binding. The only finish that I don't mind is to bring the back up and fold and use it for a binding. If I have to make binding and add it. I am not good at it, and as far as I can see it never looks good.

- Re:I like making Quilts, BUT - 2008-08-18 15:07:01-04
Deb, I have a piece of thick moleskin stuck to the faceplate of my machine at exactly the distance I need to achieve the 1/4 inch seam. Here is the trick. Cut two strips of fabric 2 1/4 inches wide. Sew it with the moleskin at 1/4 inch from the needle. Press the sewn strip and it should measure 4 inches. If it doesnt, move the moleskin either in a little to make a smaller seam allowance, or out to make a larger seam allowance. I had to fiddle with mine, but now its in place all I have to do is run the fabric along it and my seams are very accurate. Hope this helps a bit.
Re:I like making Quilts, BUT
- Re:I like making Quilts, BUT - 2008-08-18 15:00:50-04
Pat, Im not sure what instructions Kathy gave you but I have been using one way of joining the ends of my binding for awhile now and it is pretty easy. If you like I will scan the page from my book and post it.
I would happily trade machine quilting for binding. Now all you have to do is talk hubby into moving to Merritt and we are all set!!!
Re:I like making Quilts, BUT
- Re:I like making Quilts, BUT - 2008-08-18 14:22:28-04
Anna, I will send you a quilt to machine quilt for me and I will bind all yours by hand. I love doing the hand part of the binding. It means it's finished!!!! and now I can start another, and I enjoy sitting sewing by hand anyway.
And finding the fabric is no problem, I keep all the pieces from the quilt in a bin until it is complete with label. I cut the stips from the left overs, join them on an angle usually about every 12-15 inches, press it in half, wrap it around a cardboard in a basket and start sewing it on, my only problem is the final join on an angle, but Kathy gave instructions I shall try, then just fold to bzck anad sit and relax and stitch. It's fun , then its done!

Now put safely away until December.

Joy, I use Baking Paper, there is one at Aldi, it is wider than Glad Bake and works better I think than the one I bought at the craft fair. There is a lot on a roll will last for ages. I also use it on my embroideries so I do not melt the designs. I did that a few times and was not happy.
Re:I like making Quilts, BUT
- Re:I like making Quilts, BUT - 2008-08-17 16:23:44-04
My favorite part is picking the pattern and the fabrics. I don't much like all the cutting and getting the piles sorted into order.
With the bindings i saw on Simply Quilting one day how to do it and have never gone wrong, you do just need to see someone do it is person and you will get it.
Anna, I sometimes sew my binding down by machine, especially if the quilt is going to be washed heaps, and lucky for me they are. I sew the binding 2 1/4 doubled onto the back of the quilt and then fold over to the front and using matching cotton to the binding on top and matching to the back in the bobbin I sew around in no time. I have also used a fancy embroidery stitch in variagated cotton to add interest, looks like you did it on purpose and were just not being lazy.
The pillow case way is good too, put back and front facing sew around leaving a hole for turning then after turned slip stitch hole then sew straignt line around the edge about 3/8 then sort of looks like binding.
WHat would I do without Simply Quilts, even though watching it for about the third time, still learning things I must have missed before.
I also use the quilting spray when putting my quilt sandwich together. I use the table and add the ironing board to give a bit more width and spray the batting, put the back on and then the front. Works for me, but hubby and cats leave home when I start to spray. Apparently a bit toxic, I possibly get high on it, hey! quilt is half finished when getting to that stage.
I am ready to start another quilt now, Joy of Joys I can sit and pick the fabric and designs. I really love that part.

Really wonderful, just love it. Just sit here for a while longer thinking, thinking. Then probably do the tree, take the easy way out. Joyce

- Re:I like making Quilts, BUT - 2008-08-17 15:40:18-04
My part of making a quilt I dont like to do is the binding. I hate the whole thing, from trying to estimate how much to make, making the darn thing, sewing it on and especially I hate hand sewing it to the other side. Hate, hate hate, all of it. I even hate deciding what fabric to use for the binding. I have seen in one of my books that you can fold in the front and back and sew the edge and not bind a quilt at all and I am going to try that on some of the Christmas quilts Im making this year. If it works and looks good I may never make a binding again. hehehe, I wish!!!
The most favorite, exciting part for me is planning the quilt and shopping for just the right fabric. I guess by some of the answers here Im not alone it this.
Great question!!!!

Hey Pat, fellow Canadian, how about if we have a friendly competition with the USA girls and the overseas girls to see which lot of ladies can be the first to get their projects done? A little National Pride might just force us off our butts, oooops maybe I mean on our butts at our machines. I know I could use some kind of push to put making the wreath at the top of my to do list.
Something to think about, hugs, Anna

Re:I like making Quilts, BUT
- Re:I like making Quilts, BUT - 2008-08-17 13:49:12-04
I'm with Kathy, sandwiching the quilt is the hardest and most boring part. I do not baste, just pin, because I use a Qsnap floor frame which i think holds it firm without basting, and I start in the middle and work out. but just the whole layering thing I find hard work. Once it is done and in the frame, then I thread a dozen needles, then look at for at least a day to let it talk of which way to quilt it for sure.
I also hate trimming half square triangles, or any blocks, becuae they should just be perfect by magic and not need trimming. But I learned they must be trimmed or squared up or the whole quilt will be a waste of time cause it will be ugly.

The part that bothers me the most is the quilt sandwich . For big quilts, I have to put the layers on the floor to baste. It hurts my knees. But even smaller quilts bother, because I do them on a bed and it is a lot of bending over.
After seeing multiple directions for the corners, I did get it. Jo, what you need is to have someone show you in person. I don't have time now to search for a video at this time, but there must be one somewhere.
Because most of my quilts have been given as Christmas gifts, I can't put off any of it too long.
