I reckon thats a great idea, my daughter is diabetic so will get an extra one from the council next time. I sometimes get them mixed up and putting them in a container straight away is brilliant

I just saw some of that water fabric at our local Ben Franklin Store. I almost bought some. Instead I bought trains for the Sept. noodle exchange. I hope that will be OK.

I have a large lino floor in my kitchen and so I dont use a broom to sweep but a cloth floor sweeper. After I have been sewing and sweep my floor I always run a strong magnet over the sweeper cloth to make sure no stray pins are attached. That way I dont inadvertently leave one behind the next time I sweep. It is amazing how those little buggers can hide in the dust on the sweeper head otherwise!!

I saw the coolest thing the other day it was a ring with a flash light on it. Wouldn't that be great for finding pins or needles on the floor under your chair or looking up under the quilt to change the bobbin on your machine.

Just a quick note. I use a sharps container (one from the hospital or clinic to put used needles and syringes and lancets in) for my bent and dull needles and pins. I have just a small one and the used rotary blades fit in there, too. I sure you can purchase them at a medical supply shop, diabetic clinic, your local hospital of doctors office. I feel much better with my sharps in this container, especially with my grandbabies around, helping me in my sewing room. When the container is full, just put it in the garbage to be disposed.

Re:Foundtation Piecing/ Paper

Hi girls - didn't think one little piece of paper could generate so many post of interest..... I would like to thank all of you for your concern and interest.

My intent is only to use the paper to sew all the pieces to gether to give the block stability till the top is sewen together and then the paper would be removed...... I guess I never thought about the acid in the ink.... have used news paper before and have had no trouble... but the paper was removed within a couple of weeks. I will be going to my local news paper office to get news paper print paper which is new and has no ink on it. Thanks again....

Kathy, it is so good to have you back and adding your input to our posts and chats.
The block I did a couple of months ago was the first I had seen pieces cut to size + seam allowance. It consisted of squares, rectangles and 1/2 square triangles so easy to cut. As long as it is easy enough to place the pieces to cover all the section it works well. Just have to be a little more patient to check placing than if working with a bigger piece.
Most people seem to be put off or worried about the waste so I was really pleased to do that and find that it didn't waste. If pieces are cut just a little bigger, the waste is not a problem to me either. Not a lot of difference from some other quilting methods. Much easier than trying to juggle large pieces of fabric too.

I have been doing alot of paper piecing this year. I love the intricate designs and the accuracy. I find if I cut the fabric just slightly larger than the piece plus 1/4 inch seam allowances then if I make one side a tad to deep or a tad of center it doesnt matter. It keeps me from seam ripping which is next to impossible to do without wrecking the paper pattern. And that tiny bit extra doesnt seem to cause any wasted fabric. I guess I cut the pieces to size plus 3/8 seam allowance all around.
I would certainly encourage you to try paper piecing if you havent already. It is really fun, and gets oodles of ahhhhs from quilters and non quilters alike.
    Hugs, and happy quilting

I usually cut fabric for paper piecing with 1/4 seam allowances. I may make small pieces somewhat bigger so they aren't too small. I don't find it any more wasteful than crazy quilt piecing.

Marilyn and Jo wrote some in the Instant Chat; I'm copying some of it. Read this from the bottom up.

    # MarilynD : Yes thats right. I like to try lots and enjoy most of it. I did really enjoy the paper pieced one I did. It gives good points which I liked.
    # floral quilter : So much to enjoy with quilting, we all find our niche, blocks, applique, crazy patch etc
    # MarilynD : I also did just 1 block in a class this year and we had to cut the pieces to size with the 1/4 inch seam all. So it didnt waste anything more than any other method.
    # MarilynD : It did waste a bit more than normal but not enough to be a problem, I felt
    # floral quilter : There is I am sure more to quilting, as in your quilts in the gallery, than triangles etc. or have my 10- years quilting all been a dream
    # MarilynD : I did a paper pieced quilt - queen bed size last year - still waiting to be quilted. We cut the fabric to just a bit bigger than the section required. Some use a huge piece of fabric and that seems harder and more wasteful

I have read all your posts as to which paper is the best to use.
My question is using the paper piecing method, do you waste a lot of fabric.

I am not sure how it will effect in the long term if you get it off quickly. I am a scrapbooker so I also am careful with fabric. When we talk about our photos we are always discussing the acid content in paper and ink. I know that I personally have seen some string quilts from the fifties that had newspaper on them. On the lighter colors you could see the words coming thru on the top and even after she took the paper off in the late 80's it was still there and would not wash out. I am always thinking about what my hands look like after reading the paper when I think of newspaper. Glad you don't mind my jumping in. I love this forum and all the people I have met here. I feel like I have dozens of new friends and when I talk about ya'll I say my friend.... Have a blessed day!!

I haven't used newspaper, but I have heard somewhere that the ink won't rub off once they are 2 weeks old. I don't know if it is true. I wouldn't leave it on. I have used the paper from old desk calendars when I needed a big piece of paper. I remove all paper.

On old quilts the paper may have been left on for added warmth.
