I usually cut fabric for paper piecing with 1/4 seam allowances. I may make small pieces somewhat bigger so they aren't too small. I don't find it any more wasteful than crazy quilt piecing.
Marilyn and Jo wrote some in the Instant Chat; I'm copying some of it. Read this from the bottom up.
# MarilynD : Yes thats right. I like to try lots and enjoy most of it. I did really enjoy the paper pieced one I did. It gives good points which I liked.
# floral quilter : So much to enjoy with quilting, we all find our niche, blocks, applique, crazy patch etc
# MarilynD : I also did just 1 block in a class this year and we had to cut the pieces to size with the 1/4 inch seam all. So it didnt waste anything more than any other method.
# MarilynD : It did waste a bit more than normal but not enough to be a problem, I felt
# floral quilter : There is I am sure more to quilting, as in your quilts in the gallery, than triangles etc. or have my 10- years quilting all been a dream
# MarilynD : I did a paper pieced quilt - queen bed size last year - still waiting to be quilted. We cut the fabric to just a bit bigger than the section required. Some use a huge piece of fabric and that seems harder and more wasteful
