I haven't used newspaper, but I have heard somewhere that the ink won't rub off once they are 2 weeks old. I don't know if it is true. I wouldn't leave it on. I have used the paper from old desk calendars when I needed a big piece of paper. I remove all paper.
On old quilts the paper may have been left on for added warmth.
