Re:Help with Machine Quilting
- Re:Help with Machine Quilting - 2008-02-09 08:43:45-05
There are a few reasons this can happen.
First of all how big is the quilt? And how is it basted?- if you used a pins to baste on a large quilt and the pins are spaced too far apart you will get puckers. I like to use the 2 finger spacing that means pins are no further than the width of two finger.
- If you used thread to baste, the same thing can happen if your stitches are two far apart.
What type of quilting are you doing? free motion? or some kind of straight line quilting? like in the ditch, or outline or grids?- With straight line quilting you need to use a walking foot. Which will help move the top layer of fabric at the same rate as the bottom.
- With free motion quilting, you need to be careful that you are not pushing the fabric or pulling the fabric faster than you are stitching.
- With free motion tension should not be too much of an issue, but with straight line quilting it might be. If you have some scraps of fabric and batting (preferably the same as your quilt) make a small sandwich and do some test stitches and adjust your tension if needed.
These are just a few things I can think of without actually seeing what you are doing.
Let me know if it helps.

[file] Thank you all for the compliments and here is another one and I had great fun and also learned about making them smaller. Here is a heart miniature quilt I have had in my mind for ages and finished it. the hearts are 5cm square and the quilt 10x8inches so it is small.

Quilt as you go
- Quilt as you go - 2008-02-07 01:04:04-05
Hello
I have learned to do a rag quilt by sewing the blocks together and then together in rows. Now I would like to do a quilt called quilt as you go or also called block by block quilt. I would like to do it all my machine the same way as the rag quilt was done. Can someone tell me how you did it by using sashing (piece of fabric between the blocks)What size width do I need to cut? Any help or suggestions Please and thank you.B.

I, also, have hand quilted with a QSnap. Though lately I have pin basted well and quilted without a frame. My hand quilting has been on quilts backed with fleece and I feel the hoop can distort the backing.

Anna, I use QSnap both for my floor frame and for my carry along frame. I find I do not have to baste, just pin together and you can adjust the tension to your liking. I like mine pulled tight, but my sister has hers loose, so I guess it's your preferance, whatever works. My carry along is the 14 inch, but I have an extender to make it 17 inch. My floor frame also has an extension from 36 to 72 inch. I find if I can rest the hand frame on an arm of a chair or table or even your knee then it frees up your hand to quilt with.
Good luck and hope all goes well, concentrate hard on those stitches and everyone will think the tears are just frustration! Will be thinking of you and Tom. Hope the weather co-operates. We have another 15 cm of snow today and another 10 or 15 coming tonight!! Isn't winter in Canada beautiful!
All the best. Pat

here is a good link to how to hand quilt I use a hoop similar to this one. http://www.quilttownusa.com/mom/hqbbeginners.htm
I have a heard that you should not use an embroidery hoop for hand quilting. If your tension is not right on the fabric it will be hard to get the rocking motion going.
I put my fabric in the hoop, then tighten the nut. Then I lay the hoop on the table and put my hand in the center pressing lightly to test the tension. It should give and then bounce back not sag. And if you can not press it down to the table it is probably too tight. It was once said to me that it should look like the cat just sat on the fabric. Does that make sense?
Hope this helps.

help picking a hoop for hand quilting
- help picking a hoop for hand quilting - 2008-02-05 14:48:46-05
I have a few placemats that I started before Christmas and didnt get past the cut out stage. I am going to sew one together tonight to take with me tomorrow. I cant hand quilt but maybe now is the perfect time for me to practice, practice, practice.
Does anyone have a preference for a hoop for hand quilting? I have some I use for hand embroidery and painting and wonder if they would work. Previous tries have just been loose work on scraps of fabric. Maybe the hoop will help me get the rocking stitch figured out.
Thanks, Anna

Sue,
That is a beautiful job, I know you are very proud. Will you be hand quilting or machine quilting it? Have you taken the machine quilting class over in the Quilting weekly clasroom ? I haven't taken that one, but have taken and taught several, so if you need some direction you might consider that. Your color choices are great and the border it very nice.

Do you still need a 4 house block? I have several house blocks in my EQ5 program which I can make any size. I am not sure how to post them here, but I should be able to send them in an attachment in an e-mail.
Just let me know........I will do what I can, if I can.
Take care

Great job Sue. Doesn't it feel good to finish the first one. By the time you finish quilting it you will have the next one all planned in your head. I love starting a new one, and I can't wait to finish it, the next one is crowding it out of my head.

Block central has a paper pieced 6 house block. Just click on the block title to get the pattern. You should be able to resize it with your printer, or just draft it to the size you want.

Your quilt is beautiful. I love it. Under the quilterscache.com site under paperpiecing blank templtes there is a pattern for a house that is about 5 x 6 inches I think. You could adjust the size on the photocopy machine to whatever size you wanted.
A friend made me a few real miniature (about 2 or 3 inch) quilts to put on my miniature sewing machines in my curio cabinet. They look real cute.
