- Corners - 2008-08-16 12:13:36-04
This is the easiest way I've found to do a neat corner.I always use the double thickness binding with the raw edges to the edge of the quilt. pieces joined at 45 degree angle.
Sew along the edge of the quilt the width you want the binding to finish up e.g. 3/8th inch. when you get 3/8th inch from the corner stop with the needle DOWN. Pivot to face the corner and sew off the edge. This gives you a line to fold the fabric on. Fold the fabric back, and then down the next side. Repeat for each corner. When hand sewing the back, fiddle with the corner so that the bulk is on the other half of the corner. I'm attaching a drawing of the angle -just ignore the wobbly lines.

Re:I like making Quilts, BUT
- Re:I like making Quilts, BUT - 2008-08-16 11:37:14-04
I tend to make a few tops, and then quilt them all. Even before i had to make space and set up the frame I used to do that. I just like piecing better I guess. I enjoy quilting and get a sense of achievement when it's finished but I prefer the coming together of colours and shapes into the finished top - a bit like completing a big jigsaw puzzle. Re the corners, I was hopeless until I got told to sew a 45 degree angle in. I'll try and post something under the how to section later.

Hi Jo
My mental block comes with the quilting... don't want so goof up a project or quilt that has turned out to that point...... quilting machine or by hand???????
Where do I quilt, what pattern, to much or to little quilting??????? Maybe I could do your corners and you do the quilting..... bet you are laughing about this one......
Diane
I like making Quilts, BUT
- I like making Quilts, BUT - 2008-08-16 09:29:44-04
Question, when making a quilt does anyone else,
find there is something they least like doing.
My mental block, is corners on binding, I know I should have a postive attitude, BUT, get to corner, Oh my, say no more. Tried to follow instructions in magazines/books. BOL there is a little block in my brain which stumbles at corners.
I get there in the end, a corner which is acceptable.
Do you hate clearing up ends of cotton, pins etc, no good fairies around over night.
The easy part of a quilt is Fabric, ideas flowing.

Mine has 3 colours. The flowers in the maze and then the bars are in 2 colours. I have bright pink and blue flowers and then bright pink, and then bright blue mazes. I should take a picture and post it, but hate being shown up all the time with everyone else's beautiful work.

Please please, a pic Pat. No showing up done here. Your work is well worth admiring.
Besides you cant see in the photo that some of my strips are a bit out of line.
I would like to see the effect with three colours.

Re:Floral Noodles
- Re:Floral Noodles - 2008-08-14 02:05:27-04
a rough plan on paper. Do others call it a mud map or is that just in my quilting group? We always use that expression so I thought everyone did. I roughly drew the blocks and then coloured the sections.
If my scanner worked I could show you my very rough mud map - but it doesnt want to cooperate.
Graeme\'s Quilt
- Graeme\'s Quilt - 2008-08-14 00:08:26-04
Made this month's ago for the birthday of our best friend Graeme, a bachelor, he buys me quilting books and magazines at the trash market. We quite often buy him train books as he (like Ron) is obsessed by trains but for his 60th we wanted a special present for a special person so I made him a quilt. First time I made a 'male' quilt.

Thats a good tip to use the baking sheet, probably a lot cheaper than the ones they sell at quilt shops too. I've been quilting for 3 1/2 years, but only started applique this year when I got a machine that does buttonhole stitch as I'm always in a rush so any tips gratefully received

- teflon sheet - 2008-08-13 21:16:19-04
Hi, Just been reading posts for the first time in ages and saw the one about parchment paper. I`m in the UK and I use a flexible teflon sheet (normally used in baking tins)to protect my iron and ironing board. I make a sandwich with two sheets, pressing the sticky bits inside. Peel the sheet when cooling. The sheet is washable too.Liz

Pat, it did take a bit of unpicking in the beginning before I got things going the right way. Then it all flowed quite well.
I wasnt sure if it would work with different fabrics as the pattern is done in just 2 colours, but my mud map showed it was ok.

I chatted with Betty for a while last night, she was waiting to see if Anna came on. She was so overwhelmed.
She claims no one can surprise her, as she has dreams and knows everything in advance. But this one really shook her.
We also need to remember her 50th wedding anniversary is May 29, 2009. Maybe we should put it in our birthday list.

Marilyn, I made that pattern as a mystery quilt at a quilt retreat. Takes concentration to keep everything going right way. Mine is large bed size and yes waiting to be quilted. I always finsih the tops, but don't have time to do the quilting.
Yours is lovely with all the different fabrics, follows the name, garden maze a real maze of fabrics.
Love it, great job.

Re:Floral Noodles

I was inspired by Jo's floral noodles quilt so got into cutting mine up. This is the finished quilt top.
It is a pattern called Garden Maze from About.com Quilting. I have kept coming back to that pattern so finally decided to go with it.
Next comes the quilting.
I used up almost all of each fabric - so much so that I had to cut very carefully as if I made a mistake I would have been in trouble. It worked out to be the perfect amount - the little scraps I have left I will use somehow in the label.

Poor neglected husband Poor son
Anna, the reason you got so sick and could not get better was because you were looking after everyone else. I know hubby was very sick and needed you, and son was very sick and needed you, but as we tried to tell you, YOU also neeed YOU. So slow down now, learn your lesson and try to STAY WELL. We need you. Who is going to give me a big hug when I need it (like last week)? if you are not looking after yourself? So listen to my lecture and take heed. they will be more neglected if you do not take time for you.
Love, your friend .Pat
Re:My sons birthday quilt
- Re:My sons birthday quilt - 2008-08-11 11:47:08-04
Thanks everyone for the lovely comments. Yes my son does love it. He calls it his love blanket . And I do think it makes him feel better to have it. He is doing so much better since the doctors now are doing more to ease his pain and help him sleep at night. Thats a wonderful thing.
This was the first time I did any free style quilting on a regular machine. I have used my machine on the quilting frame downstairs to do some stipple quilting but thats just moving the table not the quilt.
I used colored thread on the top and used it to add highlights. One of my quilting friends who I showed it to when I got home said the type of quilting is called, painting with thread. Whatever its called it sure is effective. I will do it again for sure.
Now I just have to find the time to make one for my poor neglected husband.
Hugs, Anna
