Quilt as you go

  Hello
  I have learned to do a rag quilt by sewing the blocks together and then together in rows. Now I would like to do a quilt called quilt as you go or also called block by block quilt. I would like to do it all my machine the same way as the rag quilt was done. Can someone tell me how you did it by using sashing (piece of fabric between the blocks)What size width do I need to cut? Any help or suggestions Please and thank you.B.
