I think the patched second border is a great idea. You could stick to squares, or half square triangles. If you have a bunch of those left over from making the quilt its a good way to use them up. OR..... you could try another new technique and sew the half square triangles together to make flying geese rectangles.
Your on the right track. I cant wait to see it finished. Lovely happy quilt
