Tennye, the one I made (in a class) was with a pattern not the book or tool. It was pretty simple as long as you kept your pieces in place on the table beside you and sewed them in order. It is more of a pinwheel style than Ruth's, but the same effect. Of course mine is done in flowers and very bright, which is how I do all lessons.
